Poudre Valley Hospital provides free educational materials to patients with Food Allergies

Fort Collins, Colorado September 7, 2012: Approximately every three minutes an American visits the hospital due to food allergy, according to a study published by Dr. Sunday Clark, published in April 2007 (www.med.cornell.edu). Immediately following recovery from a food allergy reaction is a crucial time to provide educational resources to parents. These resources help them learn how to safely manage food allergies, yet these materials are rarely available to hospital patients.
Thanks to a concerned parent and many local businesses and volunteers, Poudre Valley Hospital (PVH) in Fort Collins, CO, is now providing educational materials to their patients and families following a food allergy-related visit to the emergency room. The Community Health and Pediatrics departments at PVH will also have food allergy bags on hand for patients and their families.
The food allergy bag idea was created by Catherine Teck, a local parent who manages food allergies on a daily basis and founder of the Northern Colorado food allergy support group I-CAN (Inspiring Children with Allergies Network).
Local businesses Allergy Free Table, LLC, Aspen Medical Center, Colorado Allergy and Asthma Center, and Lisa Shaw of PVH; support groups Healthy Kids Club, part of University of Colorado Health (formerly Poudre Valley Health System), I-CAN and Parents of Allergic and Asthmatic Children (PAAC); Dr. Carol Fenster, Ph.D, and local families donated materials, time and energy to fill 100 bags with educational materials and books on how to safely manage food allergies.
Catherine recognized the need, PVH took the initiative and the educational resources inside the bag will help save lives. This was a fantastic team effort by everyone involved. Hopefully the idea will catch on across the nation, said Julie Trone, CEO at Allergy Free Table, who donated 100 books Food Allergies & Children to this project and a member of I-CAN.
